1700.
The day was near its end as Sam stepped out of the elevator and walked down the long corridor towards her lab. It had been a long day and she was looking forward to getting out of the mountain and going home. All she had heard all day was the other women on Base going on and on about how their boyfriends and husbands had spoiled them for Valentine's Day. About how sweet they were. Or how cute they were. Or about what a wonderful evening they were going to have. Even Lieutenant Rush had bragged about the box of chocolates she had received from Jonas.
She couldn't take it anymore. What was so damn special about Valentine's Day anyway? You didn't need to give someone gifts to show them how much you cared. It was all just a scam by the retail companies trying to grab your consumer dollars.
It wasn't that she had expected to get anything this year. She hadn't. It was the first year since Lieutenant Simmons had left the SGC. And as annoying as he had been, he had always given her something special on the day. So this year, despite herself, she couldn't help but feel just a little disappointed.
Turning the corner she walked into her lab and switched on the light. Picking up her bag from the chair she opened it and stuffed two large books inside - a bit of light weekend reading. Moving to her laptop she closed it down and turned it off before picking up her bag and slinging it over her shoulder. She made a quick turn around the room, shutting off her equipment. Taking her keys out of her pocket she made for the door. Shutting off the lights she closed the door and locked it.
She walked back down the corridor to the elevator. Running her security pass through the reader, she waited for the elevator to come. A moment later the doors opened and Sam was greeted by the face of her CO.
"Hi sir," she said stepping into the elevator. She pressed the button for the surface before stepping back to stand next to him.
"Hey Carter," O'Neill said as the elevator doors closed on them. "Heading home?"
"Yep. You?" she asked.
"Nah, not yet. I gotta finish some things first." She was leaving before him? That was a first. "That bag of yours looks pretty heavy. Whatcha got in there, a whole bunch of Valentines?"
"Heh," she laughed. "Unfortunately no. Didn't even get one this year."
"Get outta here, really?" he said in disbelief.
"Really," she confirmed.
The elevator stopped at sublevel level 15 and the doors opened. "Oh well, the day isn't over yet Carter. Ya never know, you may still get one," he said stepping out of the elevator.
'Yeah right,' she thought. The truth was the one person who she wanted to receive a Valentine from would never give her one.
"Have a good weekend." He smiled at her before the doors began to close.
"Yeah, you too sir," she smiled back.
When the elevator reached the surface Sam stepped out. Giving a quick smile to the SF's at the last checkpoint, she walked out into the car park.
Walking up to her car, she put the key in the lock and opened the door. Throwing her bag into the passengers seat she climbed in. As she sat down she noticed something sitting on her windscreen.
It was a single red rose. Its long stem hooked underneath one of the wipers.
Sam opened the door and climbed out of the car. Reaching over she lifted the wiper and picked up the rose. It was beautiful. Its petals were full of brilliant colour. She brought the rose to her nose and inhaled deeply, its sweet scent filling her.
Looking down at the windscreen, she noticed a small white card. She picked up the plain card and opened it. Two simple words looked up at her in a scrawl that was only too familiar.
For You.
She smiled to herself and closed the card.
Maybe Valentine's Day wasn't so bad after all.
The End.
